Vanilla liqueur vs arranged rum: what’s the difference?

They are often placed in the same category because they can have similar notes... but vanilla liqueur and arranged rum are actually quite different.

The first difference is the base.

Avanilla liqueuris generally made from an alcohol to which vanilla and sugar are added to create something sweeter, rounder, and often more indulgent.

Thearranged rum, on the other hand, starts with rum in which ingredients like fruits, spices, or vanilla are macerated.

Vanilla is therefore oftenan ingredient in arranged rum, while it isat the center of vanilla liqueur..

In terms of taste, the difference is quite clear.

A vanilla liqueur will often be:

  • sweeter
  • more indulgent
  • more accessible

An arranged rum will generally be:

  • more powerful
  • spicier
  • more marked by the rum.

If you’re looking for something easy to drink, as a digestif, on the rocks, or even in a cocktail, vanilla liqueur is often a good entry point.

If you want more character and something more “raw,” arranged rum will probably be more suitable.

In the end, it’s not really a duel.

Vanilla liqueur puts vanilla in the spotlight.

Arranged rum puts rum at the center and lets the ingredients accompany it.

And depending on what you are looking for... both can have their place.
